Student focus – Ceramic sculpture

Hatty joined the class this term and has already made some very distinctive work. Above are three of her first small pieces, each inspired by mythological women who didn’t quite conform to narrow stereotypes of femininity! Instead of using conventional ceramic techniques, Hatty decided to use the (stoneware fired) clay body as a canvas for acrylic paints, achieving an intensity of colour and control of detail not easily achieved with slip or glaze. Students in the ceramic sculpture class are always encouraged to achieve the results they want rather than be constrained by ceramic techniques or the ideas of purism that can limit traditional ceramics. Hatty is now working on a much larger piece, exploring the same theme and seeing how a change in scale affects the potency of the pieces. There are some very interesting ideas here relating to the representation of women and nature, I’m looking forward to seeing this work develop!
