First up is a Paperclay Masterclass on the at the new Centre for Craft in Lansdown. 29th and 30th March.(For booking please contact me direct as the online booking form is not yet live). This is a great workshop for those of you who want to try something new! Paperclay is a wonderful, expressive and flexible material that isn’t used that much in ceramics because it is still relatively new and also because it is so different to normal clay that people tend to need the extra guidance and many come back for two or even three courses to learn how to break all the rules of working with ‘normal’ clay. So what is paperclay? Paperclay is any clay with added paper fibre which gives the clay some pretty marvellous qualities and properties and enables you to make some amazing work that would be very difficult or even impossible with normal clay. My two day masterclasses give an in depth introduction to Paperclay, covering all aspects of building, joining, mixing clays, Paperclay armatures, additions and inclusions and also firing. For more information have a look at this page or contact me directly.
Next up, Paperclay Sketchbooks at the Brewery Arts in Cirencester, June 10th: A favourite workshop designed to give a truly free and playful introduction to Paperclay. Create a 3d sketchbook of ideas expressed in paperclay! You’ll be encouraged to experiment freely on a large porcelain Paperclay slab, using a variety of exciting techniques such as embossing, printing, sgraffito, slip transfer and many more. After completing your experimentation and design, cut the slab to create a series of sheets which flow and link. These can be pierced ready to be wired or sewn together once fired. Very little experience of working with clay is necessary for this, it is an ideal and very creative introduction to Paperclay and also to working through ideas. Booking online not yet open, keep and eye out on here
I’ll also be running this Paperclay Sketchbooks workshop at the Victoria Works Studios in Chalford, August 5th, for those of you on the north side of the County! The same format, a different place. Come and join me in the inspiring Victoria works studios, surrounded by artists and craftspeople. For more information click here
Botanic Wall Plaques is next up, on Aug 19th, at The New Brewery Arts. This is an exciting new workshop in which you will be able to preserve and transform a beautiful bouquet of flowers or other plant material into an everlasting and detailed wall plaque. You’ll be able to spend a little time examining the plant material and creating a large collaborative ‘sampler’ as a test piece, then move on to your own highly individual compositions. You could also use fabric and other imprinting materials to add to the design. This is an opportunity to learn a little about working with clay and plaster, whilst going away with a beautiful finished piece to cherish forever.
Which brings us into Autum and once again the lovely Paperclay Lanterns on October 21st, at the lovely Victoria Works Studios, Chalford. Another favourite, you can come and learn about paperclay whilst creating a wonderful translucent porcelain lantern. There’s little better at this time of year than settling down for a day of making and experimenting with a cosy group of like-minded people, creating something to brighten up your home at the dark time of year. As in all other workshops, work will be fired and available to collect from the venue after approximately 2 weeks. For more information and booking click here
You can find more details of all of these workshops in previous blog posts on this blog, or though the organisation website. Please contact me for more information and to reserve places for those courses where the website booking form is not yet live. I look forward to seeing you at some of these workshops!
P.S. this is only a small section of the teaching I do, keep an eye on Periscope events over at www.periscopics.wordpress.com for immersive, participatory events in the area, starting off with an exciting event at Easter!
